- After 20 years as Dean of the College of Pharmacy at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Dr. H. David Bergman has retired.

David Bergman Scholarship Fund in honor of Dr. Bergman’s dedicated 20 years as dean of the SWOSU College of Pharmacy. - Sokolosky Gives $25,000 to Pharmacy Campaign – D.M. (1955) and Phyllis Sokolosky of Owasso have given $25,000 to the SWOSU College of Pharmacy in Weatherford. “We are giving to the Southwestern Pharmacy Foundation as a ‘thank you’ to the school for the education received and the opportunity to establish a retail drug store in Owasso.” (More)

D.M. Sokolosky of Owasso recently contributed $25,000 to the SWOSU College of Pharmacy in Weatherford. The donation is part of the Pharmacy Campaign which includes raising money for academic program enrichment, endowments, scholarships and the College of Pharmacy history and museum. Accepting is SWOSU College of Pharmacy Alumni & Development Director Patti Harper.

- Jerry Hodge (65) of Amarillo, Texas, has been named the 2008 Outstanding Alumnus of the Southwestern Oklahoma State University College of Pharmacy in Weatherford. (More)

The Pharmacy Alumni Association annually presents an award for Outstanding Alumnus of Southwestern Oklahoma State University College of Pharmacy. This award is presented to an individual demonstrating exceptional support of the College of Pharmacy and outstanding personal achievements in the profession. Nominations for the 2009 annual award are due before February 1, 2009 (Outstanding Alumnus Nomination Form).
- Lowell (1955) and Norbeta Irby celebrated 50 dedicated years in business on November 21, 2008, at Lowell’s Pharmacy in Artesia, New Mexico.

- 2009 Homecoming is October 24! - The College of Pharmacy will celebrate SWOSU homecoming with special events on Saturday: a come-and-go Open House between 10AM and 1PM, a 50-Year Pharmacy Recognition Ceremony at 11AM, and a complimentary lunch following the ceremony. Also, a possible 25-year class reunion! And who knows what else!?! All pharmacy alumni and friends are invited to attend the pharmacy homecoming activities. The COP activities will be held on the 3rd floor in the Chemistry, Pharmacy, Physics building.
More details about all of the SWOSU and College of Pharmacy homecoming activities will be sent later in the year. The College of Pharmacy will honor the Class of 1959 at the 50-Year Pharmacy Graduate Recognition Ceremony. Special class reunions are encouraged (40-Year, 30-Year, 25-Year, 20-Year and 10-Year are suggested). Contact the College of Pharmacy Alumni Office for class reunion assistance.
In addition to the COP events, a plethora of university-wide activities will be held throughout the day, including the parade, alumni reception and SWOSU football game. Please be sure to mark your calendar and make plans to attend SWOSU Homecoming in October.
- Class of 1984 – There is a rumor that a 25-year class reunion (for the combined classes of 1983, 1984 and 1985) will be planned for either 2009 SWOSU Homecoming or another time during the year. - Paul Moore (78) of Moore (formerly Atoka), Oklahoma, has received the 2008 National Community Pharmacists Association “Spirit of Independence” Award. The award, presented at NCPA’s 110th Annual Convention, recognizes individuals who have shown a significant and sustained contribution to the future of independent pharmacy.

- Captain Gary Blair (78) of San Angelo, Texas, has been selected for the Joel T. Boone Award from the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States. Director of Pharmacy for Data-Rx. Management. The award is considered the Association’s second highest award for service to the Association, following the Founder’s Medal. Blair, Director of Pharmacy for Data Rx. Management, was chosen by the Association for outstanding service to the Association.

- Ronnie Scott Holuby (1998) sent news that he has accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the University of Hawaii-Hilo. Aloha!
- Glenn Rebber (75) now resides in Waco, Texas and is the Director of Pharmacy at the Family Practice Clinic of McClennan County.
- James Blaine Butts, Jr. (73) and Family Leave Legacy in Angel Fire – James and Sharon, along with children J.B. and Brittany, have moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, after being a part of the daily life of Angel Fire for more than 30 years. At the age of 26, James opened a pharmacy, Angel Fire Pharmacy, in the then-small-resort of Angel Fire (consisting of the Resort, one small restaurant, and the Mini Mart which housed the pharmacy). Within ten years, the town had grown large enough to support a village government and James was elected the first mayor. And now, after…. (More)

Southwestern Pharmacy Alumni Foundation is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.

A SWOSU College of Pharmacy Alumni Reception was held on Thursday, June 19, 2008, at the Cherokee Casino Resort in Catoosa, Oklahoma, in conjunction with the annual Oklahoma Pharmacists Association Convention. Pharmacy Alumni Association Membership - The Pharmacy Alumni Association (PAA) exists to support the Southwestern Oklahoma State University College of Pharmacy students, alumni, faculty, and friends. Through annual and lifetime memberships, the SWOSU Pharmacy Alumni Association exists to assist the College of Pharmacy in its efforts to educate pharmacy students, to provide opportunities for interaction with pharmacy alumni, and to recognize the contributions and achievements of pharmacy alumni. - Alice Kirkpatrick (2001) of Tulsa, Oklahoma, was appointed clinical assistant professor and experiential education at the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy.

- Pharmacy Dean - A dean’s search committee, chaired by Dr. Benny French, has been formed and the interviewing process will begin in January. Until the position is filled, Dr. James Scruggs will serve as interim dean. Dr. Scruggs, who recently retired, served as acting dean in 1988 prior to the hiring of Dr. Bergman.
From 1939 to 1948, Pharmacy was first a department and then a division at Southwestern. In 1948, it became a school and Dr. Alfred Schram, a chemistry professor, was named acting dean. In 1949, W.D Strother became the first dean of the School. Dr. Walter L. Dickson led the school from 1965 to 1979. Dr. H.F. Timmons served as acting dean twice (1979-1981) as well as Dean of the School of Health Sciences (1987). From 1981 to 1987, Dr. B.G. Keller, Jr. held the position of Dean. Dr. Scruggs served as acting dean in 1988. Dr. Bergman then led the school for two decades.
Who will become the next leader of the SWOSU College of Pharmacy remains to be seen, but the tradition and dedication to excellence in pharmacy education will continue as the College of Pharmacy celebrates 70 years of excellence in 2009.
- Teachers of the Year – College of Pharmacy faculty Dr. Benny French and Dr. Nina Morris were named Teachers of the Year for 2007-08 by the senior pharmacy students. The awards were presented at the pharmacy senior graduate recognition ceremony held on the Weatherford campus in May. French was the award recipient for the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Morris was the Department of Pharmacy Practice winner.

- Dr. Steve Pray – NABP has awarded Dr. W. Steven Pray the Henry Cade Memorial Award for 2008. The Henry Cade Memorial Award was established in 1994 and recognizes the assistance provided to the state boards of pharmacy and NABP in protecting the public health by individual members of the pharmaceutical industry. - Faculty Receive Promotions/Tenure – Dr. Les Ramos advanced in rank from Associate Professor to Professor; Dr. Erin Callen advanced in rank from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor. Dr. Callen also was granted tenure.
- Pharmacy Faculty Honored – Dr. David Bergman (20 years), Dr. Scott Long (10 years) and Dr. Les Ramos (10 years) were among several SWOSU faculty members honored for their years of service. The SWOSU Faculty Senate annually honors 10, 20, 25, 40 and 45 years of service.
- New Pharmacy Faculty – Dr. Alan Spies, 1995 SWOSU pharmacy graduate, has returned to his alma mater as Assistant Professor in Pharmacy Administration. After graduating from pharmacy school, he obtained a Juris Doctor and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Oklahoma. Then he earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Pharmacy Administration) from the University of Mississippi. And just prior to this return to SWOSU, he spent 5 years as an Assistant Professor in the McWhorter School of Pharmacy at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama.
Dr. Spies teaches courses in pharmacy law, human resources management for pharmacists, current topics in pharmacy practice and entrepreneurship/leadership. He also serves as faculty sponsor for the NCPA and APhA-ASP student chapters at SWOSU College of Pharmacy.
Furthermore, he has co-authored some 20 articles related to legal and pedagogy topics that range from issues related to student privacy to complying with existing federal and state laws as a higher education institution to examining pharmacy student professionalism. As a service to the profession, Dr. Spies regularly provides continuing education seminars for pharmacists covering topics pertinent to pharmacy practice. Dr. Spies is a member of APhA, AACP, ASHP, AIHP and the American Society for Pharmacy Law, to name a few.
He is also licensed to practice pharmacy in Oklahoma.

- Dr. B.G. Keller, Jr., Former Pharmacy Dean – Dr. Bernard G. Keller, Jr., former dean of the SWOSU pharmacy school, passed away on February 2, 2008. Keller worked at SWOSU from 1969 until his retirement in 1994. Memorial contributions can be made to the Gertrude Stiles Keller Memorial Scholarship Fund at Southwestern Pharmacy, P.O. - SWOSU Pharmacy Seniors Receive Honors – SWOSU College of Pharmacy seniors were honored at the graduate recognition ceremony held on the Weatherford campus in May. All seniors were awarded their Doctor of Pharmacy hoods. Various senior awards were also presented to outstanding students. (More)
- APhA-ASP (formerly SWPhA) Holds Health Fair – The APhA-Academy of Student Pharmacists chapter at SWOSU had a health fair in the SWOSU Wellness Center on the Weatherford campus. Vice-President Rachel Ingram said the chapter gave flu shots and screened for diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and also performed bone density scans. All of the SWOSU pharmacy organizations had booths at the fair. (More)
- Phi Delta Chi Helps with Disposal of Unused Meds – SWOSU Phi Delta Chi professional pharmacy fraternity in Weatherford and the Red Rock West Area Prevention Resource Center have partnered to offer a solution to the disposal of unused medications. (More)
- Kappa Psi Sponsors Labor Auction – Kappa Psi professional pharmacy fraternity at SWOSU College of Pharmacy is sponsored a silent labor auction to benefit the chapter’s activities as well as community-based fundraisers and charity events. (More)
