  • Doug Baker (’84) of Cushing has given $5,000 to the Southwestern Pharmacy Foundation as part of the FOCUS fundraising campaign.

    Doug Baker (left) of Cushing recently gave $5,000 to the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Pharmacy Foundation as part of the FOCUS fundraising campaign. Baker is a 1984 graduate of SWOSU. Accepting for SWOSU is Dr. David Ralph, associate dean of the SWOSU College of Pharmacy.


    “SWOSU gave me a great education and an excellent opportunity to provide for my family,” Baker said. “You really don’t realize ‘the big picture’ when you’re just 18 to 22 years old. Thanks SWOSU for a great educational foundation to step out in the world and succeed.”

    Baker is a Cushing High School graduate who is active in the Cushing community. He is a board member of the Cushing Educational Foundation and the Cushing Youth and Community Center. He is a deacon in the First Baptist Church. He enjoys fishing, coaching baseball and softball, farming and cattle. He and his wife, Karen, have three children—Taylaura, Kyle and Foster.

    The SWOSU College of Pharmacy FOCUS campaign is focusing on scholarships, academic program enrichment, and deferred/planning giving.   • Bob W. and Tany Talbot Brown of Hale Center, Texas, have given $5,000 to the Southwestern Pharmacy Foundation in Weatherford. The gift is for the Pharmacy FOCUS fundraising campaign.

    Tany is a 1960 graduate and Bob is a 1962 graduate of SWOSU College of Pharmacy. Tany is originally from Olustee, Okla., and Bob is originally from Pampa, Texas. Bob is the owner of three pharmacies, one in Hale Center and two in Lubbock, Texas, while Tany is a retired pharmacist who spent most of her career in institutional pharmacy. The Browns were excited to help the fundraising campaign.

    “SWOSU gave me the education to pursue a fulfilling career,” Bob said. “I feel SWOSU is doing a great job in preparing students for success.” Tany said their gift will perhaps help some young person prepare to work in a career which has meant so much to her.

    Both Bob and Tany were active students during their collegiate careers at SWOSU. Bob served as treasurer of Phi Delta Chi and was active in the student chapter of the American Pharmacy Association and the Baptist Student Union. Tany was a cheerleader, served as charter president of Kappa Epsilon and was active in APhA, Student Senate and the Baptist Student Union.

    Both remain active in Hale Center civic activities. Bob served as mayor for 18 years and held every office in the Chamber of Commerce and Lions Club. He is president of the Economic Development Corporation. Tany is a past president of the Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists. She wrote and marketed a Pharmacy Technician Training Manual for Texas retail pharmacists. She is on the Chamber of Commerce board and belongs to two study clubs. She enjoys volunteer work and Bob enjoys bow hunting for elk, deer and wild hogs. Bob and Tany have one daughter, Holly, and a son-in-law, Rick Turner. They have one granddaughter, Erin.

  • Governor Brad Henry has appointed Dorothy Gourley (’67) to the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy to a term ending June 30, 2010. She grew up in Denver City, Texas, but has been a long-time resident of Ardmore. She and her husband, Vincent, have one son, Wade, and one daughter, Cher.

    Dorothy Gourley is currently a consultant pharmacist to several rural Oklahoma hospitals. She is a member of OSHP, ASHP, APhA, and OPhA, and has been very active in professional pharmacy organizations, including the legislative committees of OPhA and OSHP, the DUR Advisory Board to the Oklahoma Healthcare Authority, the Formulary Board for Advanced Practice Nurses, and Continuing Education Committees. Dorothy Gourley is a past president and executive council member of OPhA and a member of the Southwestern Pharmacy Alumni Foundation Board of Directors.
  • Jerry Allen (’59), Weatherford, OK, recently retired from the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy. He dedicated ten years of service to the Board. He was presented a commendation from Governor Brad Henry and a trophy clock inscribed with the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy’s words of appreciation

  • Steven Gates, D.O., a Cleburne, TX, physician specializing in internal medicine and geriatrics, has been re-elected to a three-year term on the Board of Trustees of the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association. The board is the administrative and executive body of the association. Gates formally took office during the 106 th annual TOMA Convention & Scientific Seminar, held June 1-5 in Austin.

    Certified in both internal medicine and geriatrics, Gates maintains a practice in Cleburne. He is also a clinical assistant professor of internal medicine at the University of North Texas Health Sciences Center/Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth. An active member of TOMA, he has served as a member of its Environmental Health & Preventive Medicine Committee and the Membership, Services & Professional Development Committee.

    After graduating from the Southwestern College of Pharmacy in 1977, Gates earned his D.O. degree in 1986 from the Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Tulsa. He interned at Osteopathic Medical Center of Texas in Fort Worth, followed by an internal medicine residency in Grand Prairie. Steve is married to Paula, also a 1977 graduate of Southwestern College of Pharmacy.

  • Southwestern Pharmacy Alumni Association Officers for 2005-2006 are Alan Spies (’95), President, Birmingham, AL; Klem Chandler (‘79/’03), Vice President, St. John, KS; and David Ralph (’75), Secretary-Treasurer, Weatherford, OK. Help them enhance your Pharmacy Alumni Association by joining today. There are so many worthwhile projects and opportunities for service.   • Southwestern College of Pharmacy graduates Leo E. Berkenbile (’54), Skiatook, OK; Mary Ann Berry (’55), Elk City, OK; James A. Brandenburg (’54), Tulsa, OK; Joenita Burns (’54), Enid, OK; Lowell M. Irby (’55), Artesia, NM; James G. Riddle (’54), Plainview, TX; Robert F. Russell (’55), Hydro, OK; George A. Smith (’55), Madill, OK; and Nelson Taylor (’55), Astoria, OR, were awarded Gold Certificates by the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy. The certificates were awarded in recognition for the distinction of having been a licensed pharmacist in Oklahoma for 50 years.
  • Medco Health Solutions of Fort Worth, TX, recently contributed $5,000 to the Southwestern College of Pharmacy Scholarship Fund. “Through the years, Medco has encountered many successful stories from Southwestern Oklahoma State University College of Pharmacy graduates who have joined our company fulfilling their career ambition as pharmacists,” says Ross Luce, Director of Pharmacy Practice for Medco. “It is important for Medco to play an active role in supporting the Southwestern Oklahoma State University pharmacy program and we look forward in the future to further strengthening our mutually enriching relationship.”

    By providing scholarship funding, Medco is fulfilling the goals of its University Level Support Program to advance pharmacy training with selected colleges committed to educating students for the areas of professional pharmacy practice. Medco believes it is significant for them to continue as it has done for the last several years to support student scholarships.

    The active role that Medco is taking in Southwestern College of Pharmacy is greatly appreciated. Their gift will benefit deserving pharmacy students at Southwestern, according to College of Pharmacy Dean David Bergman.     The College of Pharmacy Alumni Events are informal and casual. Notices of specific pharmacy event locations will be posted on CPP Third Floor.   • The College of Pharmacy will have an Open House from 10:30AM – 1:30PM on the Third Floor of the Chemistry, Pharmacy, Physics (CPP) Building on Saturday, September 24, 2005, in conjunction with SW Homecoming. All pharmacy alumni and friends are invited. Open House will be a great chance to view the remodeling of the facilities, see the new pharmacy museum, take a stroll through the Pharmacy Alumni Garden, and visit with pharmacy alumni and faculty


  • A 50-Year Pharmacy Graduate Recognition Ceremony will be held at 11AM at the Open House. The Class of 1955 is cordially invited to this event. Because this is the first year for the Recognition Ceremony, an invitation is extended to all pharmacy alumni from prior years to participate in celebrating their 50-year milestone at this year’s event. We hope all pharmacy alumni and their families will attend this special tribute to the 50-Year Pharmacy Graduates.   • Class of ’94, ’95, ’96 - A 10-year combined class reunion for the classes of ’94, ’95, and ’96 is planned for SWOSU Homecoming on September 24. In addition to the SWOSU Homecoming Activities, they are planning to gather on the 3 rd floor of the CPP building for reminiscing, a casual lunch (lunch RSVP is September 15) and viewing the remodeling of the facilities. Additionally, a block of rooms has been reserved at the recently built Comfort Inn Hotel for the 10-year class members. These rooms are guaranteed for reservations made by September 8.   • In MemoriamMichael Brown (’03), age 26 , of Yukon, Oklahoma, died Friday, July 15, 2005, in Tishomingo, Oklahoma. He was born November 7, 1978, in Lawton, Oklahoma to Bruce Alan and Peggy Jolene (Hoock) Brown. He had lived in Lawton all of his life, attending Lawton Public Schools and graduating from Eisenhower High School in 1997. He then attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University for six years and received his Pharmacy degree in 2003. At the present time he was employed at the Norman State Veterans Center in Norman, Oklahoma as a pharmacist.

    Survivors include his parents, Bruce and Peggy Brown of Lawton, Oklahoma; a brother, Kevin Alan Brown of Stillwater, Oklahoma; maternal grandparents, John and Velma Hoock of Corn, Oklahoma; he is also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins. The family established a scholarship in Michael’s name. Memorial contributions may be made to the Michael A. Brown Pharmacy Memorial Scholarship fund, Southwestern Pharmacy Alumni Foundation, P.O.   • Pharmacy Alumni Dinners – The Southwestern College of Pharmacy and the Pharmacy Alumni Association have hosted pharmacy alumni dinners in Tulsa, Lubbock, OKC, Amarillo, Fort Worth, Ardmore, and Ponca City. If you missed the event in your area, we hope you will join us next time.

    We are planning future Pharmacy Alumni Dinners in the following locations: McAlester, Big Spring/Odessa, Dallas, Stillwater, Abilene, Fort Smith, Lawton, and Guymon.
