  • Moore Moves to Washington to Work on Rural Policy Issues – Paul Moore (’78) of Moore, Oklahoma, has joined the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).  Paul, an Oklahoma pharmacist who served as president of the National Rural Health Association in 2008, will specifically work on clinical and regulatory issues within the Office of Rural Health Policy (ORHP).  A strong supporter and friend of the SWOSU College of Pharmacy, Moore has served on the Southwestern Pharmacy Alumni Foundation Board and was selected to receive the 2007 Southwestern Pharmacy Outstanding Alumnus Award.   • Enix Honored by SWOSU College of Pharmacy – SWOSU College of Pharmacy graduate Roger Enix (’81) of Edmond was selected as the Rho Chi Pharmacy Honor Society Pharmacy Leadership Society 2009 Honored Alumnus.  Enix served as guest speaker and honorary Rho Chi president at the Rho Chi and Phi Lambda Sigma initiation ceremony held on the Weatherford campus in November 2009.  (More)

  • Pharmacy Alum Returns to SWOSU Pharmacy Class – SWOSU College of Pharmacy faculty are committed to incorporating real-world pharmacy issues into their classes by encouraging alumni to serve as guest lecturers.  Stacy Cody (’90) of Sulphur Springs, Texas, returned to the classroom to serve as a guest lecturer, meet with students and tour the pharmacy classrooms and labs.  He gave a presentation on long-term care in Dr. Steve Pray’s “Prescription Products” class.   • Pharmacy Students Need PALS – The Pharmacy Alumni Association Council (PAAC) formed the Pharmacy Alumni Lecture Series (PALS).  PALS is a great opportunity for SWOSU pharmacy graduates to return to pharmacy school and share their professional experience and accomplishments with our pharmacy students.  The PAAC is seeking pharmacy graduates in a variety of areas of the pharmacy profession.  If you are willing to share your experience and expertise with the SWOSU pharmacy students, please submit your CV/Resume to the Pharmacy Alumni Office (swpharmacy@swosu.edu or P.O. Box 702, Weatherford, OK, 73096).


  • The Pharmacy Alumni Association Council (PAAC) Wants You – The PAAC holds meetings twice a year on the Weatherford campus.  Members gather to discuss current as well as future projects that will benefit the students and alumni of the College of Pharmacy.  David Warden, Pharmacy Alumni Association President, states, “We are here to promote the interests and welfare of the College of Pharmacy and the Pharmacy Alumni Association by providing a communication link between the school and its alumni.”

    The PAAC governs the Pharmacy Alumni Association, which exists to support the SWOSU College of Pharmacy students, alumni, faculty and friends.  Through annual and lifetime memberships, the PAA assists the College of Pharmacy in its efforts to educate the students, provides opportunities for interaction with pharmacy alumni, and recognizes the contributions and achievements for SWOSU College of Pharmacy alumni.  The next meeting will be held on Friday, May 7, 2010.  Any current PAA member may attend the meeting.

    Nominations for additional PAAC members can be submitted at any time to the Alumni & Development office and/or any of the PAAC members

  • Pharmacy Grads Speak at Student’s ASHP MeetingTracie Simard (’03) of Yukon and Holly Cuthbertson (’03) of Edmond spoke about pharmacy consulting at one of the student’s ASHP meetings.

  • Council of the Fellowship of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria Recognizes SWOSU Pharmacy Graduate – The Council of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria found Abiola Aina Okeowo (’84) of Ilorin, Kwara, Nigeria, worthy for the conferment of the Fellowship of the PSN.  Her colleagues within the Region also elected her as the Regional Representative for the Commonwealth Pharmacists Association West Africa region. 


  • 2010 SWOSU Homecoming - October 16 – SWOSU will celebrate homecoming activities on Saturday, October 16, 2010, in Weatherford, Oklahoma. The College of Pharmacy will have an Open House on the 3rd Floor of the Chemistry, Pharmacy, Physics building from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. The Class of 1960 will be recognized at the 50-Year Pharmacy Graduate Recognition Ceremony at 11:00 a.m. Additionally, plans are being made for 20-, 30- and 40-year class reunions. The Pharmacy Alumni Association will provide a complimentary lunch for all pharmacy alumni and guests who RSVP they are attending the COP Open House.

  • College of Pharmacy Welcomed Back a Plethora of Pharmacy Graduates – Nearly 100 SWOSU College of Pharmacy graduates returned to SWOSU campus in Weatherford for the 2009 Homecoming activities.  The traditional College of Pharmacy Open House was held from 10AM until 1PM.  The come-and-go event gave alumni a chance to view the renovation of the facilities, see the pharmacy museum, and visit with faculty and classmates.  A special tribute to the Class of 1959 was held during the 50-Year Pharmacy Recognition Ceremony.  The 25-Year and 10-Year classes were also recognized.  Following the ceremony, the Pharmacy Alumni Association provided a complimentary lunch for pharmacy alumni and friends attending the Open House.  All the College of Pharmacy events were held on the third floor of the Chemistry, Pharmacy, Physics building on the SWOSU campus.

  • Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy Recognizes TimmonsAn honorary Doctor of Pharmacy certificate was presented to Dr. H.F. Timmons, honorary pharmacy alumnus and retired Dean of the School of Health Science, in recognition of his years of service to the profession of pharmacy.  Additionally, his numerous years of service in preparing pharmacy students in his role as teacher and mentor are acknowledged by this presentation. He is also recognized for serving on the Board of Directors of the Southwestern Pharmacy Alumni Foundation for more than 30 years, most recently as president, and for being instrumental in major fundraising efforts with the Pharmacy Foundation to support the SWOSU College of Pharmacy.

  • Walgreens Donates $10,000 to SWOSU College of Pharmacy – The SWOSU College of Pharmacy received a $10,000 check from retail pharmacy Walgreens to fund cultural diversity and leadership initiatives at the pharmacy college. (More)

  • Mike O’Grady – Mike (’89) sends news that he has moved back to God’s country.  He is now the Director of Pharmacy at Valley View Regional Hospital in Ada, Oklahoma. 


  • Doug Hannah – Doug (’90) sent news that he will graduate from the Pharm.D. Program at the University of Washington in June 2010.  He is the clinic supervisor for Multicare Health System, specifically Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup.  The clinic is anticoagulation, diabetes and nutrition.  They have prescriptive authority protocols in Washington and the clinic sees 1,600 warfarin patients a month.  They also have an ADA accredited program and see around 300 diabetic patients a month. Doug is currently working on a cholesterol and hypertension protocol to go before the P&T committee and then on the WADOH.  He further states he loves the state of Washington and Tacoma is a great city.  He enjoys that it it is close to skiing, boating, fishing and hunting. 


  • Elaine Blythe Lust – Elaine (’92) sent news of her recent move from Creighton University to the animal health industry.  Her new role is Regulatory Affairs Pharmacist for the Professional Veterinary Products. She remains in Omaha, Nebraska.  She also teaches a veterinary pharmacy course and directs a clinical rotation in veterinary pharmacy for University of Nebraska Medical Center, College of Pharmacy students. 



  • Jennifer Neuharth Craves – Jennifer (’05) of Edmond, OK, sent news in 2009 of the birth of a baby boy on January 11, 2009.  Jennifer and her husband, Chad, named their son Logan Jacob.  He was born at 5:34PM and was 19 ¾ in long


  • Cindra Winters Shangreau – Cindra (’79) of Eden, NY, sent news that she is the Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in the management of inpatient anticoagulation in addition to medication reconciliation at the time of discharge at the Western New York Veterans Health Care System in Buffalo, NY.



  • Kyle and Erica Lawson Filby – Kyle (’04) and Erica (’04) of Henderson, NV, sent news in 2009 of the birth of a Evan William Filby, born May 9, 2009.

  • Pharmacy Alumni Periodicals Available Online – Now you can access publications from the College of Pharmacy and SWOSU anytime, anywhere, through the SWOSU Digital Repository! 

    More than 70 years of memories have gone online with the launch of the SWOSU Digital Repository for the Al Harris Library at SWOSU in Weatherford.  In addition to Serials, Government Documents and Electronic Resources now being digital, the main feature is entire collection of SWOSU Yearbooks dating from 1906 to 1993.

    Pharmacy publications currently available include: Culpeper’s, A Physical Director, The Apothecary (1956-2009) The Sig (1976-2000), The Southwestern Pharmacist (1968-1973), and The Pharmacy Bulletin (1946-1970).

  • Professor Scott Long Wins Bernhardt AwardDr. Scott Long won the Bernhardt Academic Excellence Award for 2010 during the annual Bernhardt banquet held on April 1 at SWOSU in Weatherford.

    Dr. Scott Long (second from left) won the Bernhardt Academic Excellence Award for 2010.  The award for exceptional achievement in teaching, scholarship and service is made possible by Dr. William (1948 pharmacy grad) and Theta Juan Bernhardt of Midwest City.  SWOSU President Randy Beutler is also picture.


    Long, professor in the SWOSU College of Pharmacy and current chair of the SWOSU Faculty Senate, won the prestigious award at a banquet held in the Memorial Student Center on the SWOSU campus.

    “This is a very significant accomplishment for one of our faculty to achieve,” states Bernhardt Professor Virgil Van Dusen, Chair of the Pharmaceutical Sciences department at the SWOSU College of Pharmacy.  “When one of our own wins this award, we all win.  The receipt of this award by one of our own shows what an outstanding faculty we have in the College of Pharmacy.”  Previous winners include pharmacy faculty members Dr. Vilas Prabhu, Dr. Steve Pray, and Dr. Virgil Van Dusen.  (More)




  • Thompson Chosen for Scholar-in-Residence ProgramDr. Dennis F. Thompson, Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice in Oklahoma City, has been chosen as the 2010-2011 Brodie Scholar-in-Residence. Thompson’s work during his time as the Brodie scholar will be directed at continuing his research into indices available for assessing faculty scholarship.  Dr. Thompson’s work expands on methods designed to analyze and quantify a faculty member’s impact and standing in a discipline.

    The Donald C. Brodie Scholar-in-Residence program is designed to provide a focused opportunity for a faculty member within a school of pharmacy to develop, research and analyze public policy on an issue directly related to pharmaceutical education or the pharmacy profession.  The goals of the program includes: 1) increasing the understanding of important pharmacy practice or educational issues by pharmacists, other health practitioners and the public, 2) facilitating understanding of major issues by professional pharmacy organizations, and 3) stimulating scholarly study and research that considers economic, educational, ethical, historical, legal, organizational, political, regulatory and social aspects of the pharmacy profession.  The program is sponsored and supported by the American Association of College’s of Pharmacy.  Founded in 1900, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) is the national organization representing pharmacy education in the United States.





  • Talukder Represents College of Pharmacy at Research Activity Fair – Assistant Professor Dr. Rahmat Talukder and pharmacy student, Michael Pilkington, were the sole presenters representing the College of Pharmacy at the 17th Annual Student Research and Scholarly Activity Fair on April 6, 2010, in the Student Union Ballroom.  The research project was entitled “Evaluation of the Effects of Ethanol on Dissolution of Various Types of Modified Release Dosage Forms.”

    Last November, Talukder and Pilkington presented a poster at the Annual meeting of American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists in Los Angeles, CA.  Talukder’s current research project is “Evaluation of the Effect of Soluble and Insoluble Excipients on Release Behavior of Drugs from Hydrophilic Swellable Matrix.”  The material and technical supports are provided by Ashland-Aqualon Functional Ingredient, Wilimington, DE.

  • Morris Named Director of IPPE – Under the direction of Dr. Nina Morris, the SWOSU College of Pharmacy’s new program – Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPE) started during the summer of 2009.  Morris, along with Administrative Assistant Tara Stam, continues to coordinate the new program and search for appropriate pharmacy sites for the IPPE Program.  IPPE sites are not limited to Oklahoma.  If you are interested in participating in the IPPE program, please contact Dr. Morris (nina.morris@swosu.edu) or Tara Stam (tara.stam@swosu.edu) at 580-774-7170 for more information.


  • Kessler Returns to SWOSU College of Pharmacy2007 SWOSU College of Pharmacy graduate, Dr. Tiffany Sikes Kessler returned to the College of Pharmacy in August 2009, to teach in the pharmacy school.

    Kessler, originally from Fort Worth, graduated from the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science at the University of North Texas (2003) and received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from SWOSU. She completed her post-graduate year one and pharmacy residency as well as her year two residency in Internal medicine with OU.  She has also received certification as a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist.  Her most recent research project was an educational study that aimed to evaluate the impact on students’ perspectives of an introduction pharmacy practice experience following implementation of structured longitudinal assignments. She will be conducting further educational research and teach in the principles and concepts sequence of courses.

  • Regional Coordinator for Experiential Program in Tulsa HiredDr. Diana Steinl joined the SWOSU College of Pharmacy in August 2009.  She is a graduate of Purdue University.  After spending many years in the pharmaceutical industry as well as hospital pharmacy practice, Dr. Steinl joined the College of Pharmacy as the Regional Experiential Coordinator for Eastern Oklahoma.  She resides in Tulsa with her husband and three children.


  • Pharmacy Practice Department’s Administrative Assistant, Cassie Larman, Wins Staff Employee Award – Staff employee, Cassie Larman, was recognized at the SWOSU Staff & Administrator Reception as SWOSU Staff Person of the Year. (More)


  • Faculty Members Present CE Programs - SWOSU College of Pharmacy faculty members Dr. Tom Davis, Dr. Steve Pray, Dr. Virgil Van Dusen, and Dr. Ben Welch, presented the Continuing Pharmacy Education Programs held in Weatherford, Oklahoma, on April 17 and 18, 2010.

    Speakers Dr. Welch and Dr. Davis presented a Behavioral Medicine Update on Saturday, April 17.  Dr. Welch focused on mental disorders during the morning session and Dr. Davis discussed chemical dependency and dementia in the afternoon session.  On Sunday, April 18, Dr. Van Dusen presented “Interrelation of Pharmacy Ethics & Law” during the morning session and Dr. Steve Pray presented “Nonprescription Products” during the afternoon session.

    Both of the programs will be repeated by the speakers in Tulsa (September 25-26) and Oklahoma City (November 6-7).  (Brochures & More CE)

  • Professor Gives BirthDr. Shelly Prince Stockton gave birth to a baby boy, Noah Hann, on March 23, 2010.  He weighed 9 lb 1 oz and was 21.5 inches long.  Parents Travis and Shelly are doing well.

  • New SWOSU College of Pharmacy Students – During the academic year 2009-10, the Pharm.D. class (admitted from a qualified pool of 372 applications in the spring, summer and fall semesters) currently consists of 47 women and 38 men, who had an entrance mean GPA OF 3.63, ACT of 25.7, PCAT of 75%, and an average age of 23.7 years.  The application pool continues to be very competitive and appears to be a trend for the next several years.  (College of Pharmacy)

  • Pharmacy Student Named Scholar Caroline Burnett, a 1st-Year pharmacy student from Putnam City North, is one of eleven state-wide high school or college students to be named a 2010 Sir Alexander Flaming Scholar by the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.  The students were chosen from a pool of 85 applicants and will spend eight weeks this summer working with senior biomedical researchers at OMRF in Oklahoma City.  Ms. Burnett is one of only five university students selected for the program, which includes students from OU, UT Austin, University of Michigan and Baylor.  As Flaming Scholars, the students will complete research projects on various topics, including autoimmune disease, cancer biology and heart disease. For most, the program offers a first look at research outside a classroom and opens doors to a wide range of career options. (More)


  • FCP Co-Founder Returns to Campus – SWOSU College of Pharmacy graduate Stacy Cody (‘90) of Sulphur Springs, Texas, recently returned to the Weatherford campus to address the Fellowship of Christian Pharmacists, which he co-founded when he was a student at SWOSU. He also served as guest lecturer on long-term care in Dr. Steve Pray’s “Prescription Products” class.  SWOSU College of Pharmacy faculty members are committed to incorporating real-world pharmacy issues into their classes by encouraging alumni to serve as guest lecturers.   • Pharmacy Students Need PALS – The Pharmacy Alumni Association Council (PAAC) formed the Pharmacy Alumni Lecture Series (PALS).  PALS is a great opportunity for SWOSU pharmacy graduates to return to pharmacy school and share their professional experience and accomplishments with our pharmacy students.  The PAAC is seeking pharmacy graduates in a variety of areas of the pharmacy profession.  If you are willing to share your experience and expertise with the SWOSU pharmacy students, please submit your CV/Resume to the Pharmacy Alumni Office (swpharmacy@swosu.edu or P.O.   • Pharmacy Student Wins National KE Scholarship – SWOSU College of Pharmacy student Jennifer Bennett of Waynoka is one of only six students selected nationally for a Zada M. Cooper Scholarship from the Kappa Epsilon Foundation.  Bennett is an active member of the SWOSU Alpha Beta chapter of Kappa Epsilon.  Faculty guidance is provided by Dr. Shelly Stockton and Dr. Tiffany Kessler.  (More)
 
  • OSHP Student Chapter Highlights – The SWOSU College of Pharmacy Student Chapter of OSHP held a charity event, hosted speakers, organized the local Clinical Skills Competition and had a fundraising campaign to help send members to the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Winning team of Carl Coates and Ean Miller represented SWOSU College of Pharmacy in the national competition.  Additionally, Ean Miller and Tara Newton presented school posters at the Midyear Clinical Meeting.  Advisors are Dr. Tiffany Kessler and Dr. Nancy Williams.


  • PLS Students Offering Warmth – The College of Pharmacy’s student leadership society, Phi Lambda Sigma, is selling “College of Pharmacy” throws as one of their fundraising projects.  (Order Form)

    Proceeds from the sale of the 48” x 68” throws will be used to help send interested pharmacy students to the Utah School on Alcohol and Substance Abuse held each year in June in Salt Lake City as well as help send Phi Lambda Sigma representatives to the annual APhA Convention.

    The Alpha Psi Chapter of Phi Lambda Sigma was founded in the Spring of 1993. Phi Lambda Sigma is a pharmacy leadership society. Phi Lambda Sigma's primary purpose is to honor and recognize those individuals who have demonstrated significant leadership ability in pharmacy as students or practitioners. The Alpha Psi Chapter of Phi Lambda Sigma is very involved with various pharmacy school and community activities. Support and guidance for the Alpha Psi Chapter is provided by Dr. Benny French and Dr. ElGenia French.
