Wanda Elaine
Blythe Lust (92), of Omaha, Nebraska is
an assistant
professor in
the Department of Pharmacy
Practice
at Creighton
University. Dr. Lust (Pharm.D.)
has
been
selected to join a Veterinary
Medical Assistance
Team (VMAT), a
group of
highly trained veterinarians,
vet
technicians
and pharmacists which assists
local
veterinarians
in case of a catastrophic
emergency.
Lust is only
the second pharmacist in the
nation to
join
a VMAT team.
VMAT teams support the local veterinary community in whatever
way necessary after disasters such as floods, tornadoes,
terrorist attacks, disease outbreaks or any emergency situations
that might arise. The VMAT teams are under the jurisdiction
of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and are prepared
to provide care for livestock, exotic, companion and rescue
animals. After the attacks in September 11, 2001, VMAT
teams were called in to support and rescue pets and care
for rescue dogs.
There are five VMAT regional teams in the U.S. As part
of VMAT-5, Lust could be deployed anywhere in the U.S.
to assist with pain control, anesthesia or sedation to
animals as needed. According to Lust, she has had a love
for caring for animals since she was young. “I am
a farm girl,” said Lust. “I am very excited
to be given this opportunity to use my background and education
to be a part of Homeland Security, ” she
said.
