Alumni and Friends News - March - June, 2009

  • Irbys Donate $20,000 to Pharmacy Foundation - Lowell (’55) and Norberta Irby of Artesia, N.M., recently donated $20,000 to the Southwestern Pharmacy Alumni Foundation in Weatherford.  The gift was designated to the Irby Family Practice Grant Fund that gives grants to pharmacy students on practice rotations who have demonstrated significant financial need.

    The Irbys established the fund in 1996 and have contributed over $197,000 to the Pharmacy Foundation since that time. (More)

  • Timmons Receives AwardDr. H.F. Timmons of Weatherford has been named the 2009 Outstanding Alumnus of the SWOSU College of Pharmacy.  He was also awarded honorary pharmacy alumni status because of his long and productive career with the SWOSU COP.  (More)

He was honored during the college's recent awards and white coat ceremony held on the SWOSU Campus. Making the presentation is Dr. James Scruggs, interim dean of the college.





  • Pharmacy Alumni Reception – A SWOSU College of Pharmacy reception was held at the Chateau on the Lake in Branson, Missouri, on Thursday, June 4, 2009, in conjunction with the Oklahoma/Kansas Pharmacists Association Annual Convention.  A number of SWOSU COPharmacy graduates and friends filled the room to renew friendships and reconnect.

    Some of the pharmacy graduates in attendance were Mike Bugher, Elk City; Van Coble, Winfield, KS; Bob Dishman, Lawton, OK; Gary Fancher, Flippin, AR; Dorothy Gourley, Ardmore; Joe Hoover, Stigler; Amber & Chad Jones, Chelsea; Darcy King, Lenexa, KS; John Lassiter, Moore; Shonda Lassiter, Moore; Paul Moore, Moore; Bryan Potter, Elk City; David Ralph, Weatherford; Debra Rushing, Oklahoma City; Megan Rushing, Del City; Phil Woodward, Yukon; and Leon Wills, Edmond.

    Prize drawing winners were Judy Bugher (College of Pharmacy glass mug), Gary Fancher (SWOSU Bulldog clock), Joe Hoover (COP Christmas ornament), Montie Hoover (COP koozie and decals), John Lassiter (COP glass mug), Shonda Lassiter (COP Christmas ornament), Paul Moore (COP t-shirt), Bryan Potter (COP koozie and decals), Debra Rushing (COP koozie and decals), and Megan Rushing (COP decals).  Grand Prize (COP afghan) winner was Joe Hoover.  Prizes donated by Pharmacy Alumni Association.

  • Pharmacy Alumni Association Membership - The Pharmacy Alumni Association (PAA) exists to support the Southwestern Oklahoma State University College of Pharmacy students, alumni, faculty, and friends. Through annual and lifetime memberships, the SWOSU Pharmacy Alumni Association exists to assist the College of Pharmacy in its efforts to educate pharmacy students, to provide opportunities for interaction with pharmacy alumni, and to recognize the contributions and achievements of pharmacy alumni.   The Pharmacy Alumni Association is becoming more active as more pharmacy alumni become members.  Your participation in the Pharmacy Alumni Association is vital to the continued success of the PAA and the College of Pharmacy. Please join the Pharmacy Alumni Association today.


  • Pharmacy Alumni Association Council (PAAC) – The PAAC held their Mid-Year meeting on Friday, May 8, 2009, in Weatherford.   Members present: Jennifer Shaffer Barbee, Jill Copus Phillips, Tom Davis, Dorothy Gourley, Steve Pray, David Ralph, Tracie Simard, Alan Spies, David Warden, and Patricia Rodgers Wollman.  Ex-officio members and staff present were Dr. H.F. Timmons, Dr. James Scruggs, Patti Harper and Monica Roper.  Guest in attendance was Genny Holman.

    Updates were given: College of Pharmacy by Dr. James Scruggs (Interim Dean), Pharmacy Foundation by Dr. H.F. Timmons (Past President), Pharmacy Alumni Association membership and budget by Dr. David Ralph (PAA Secretary/Treasurer), and Alumni & Development activities by Patti Harper.  Committee reports were given by chairs: Current Students by David Warden, Recent Graduates given by Jill Copus for Janet Seratte, and membership by Alan Spies.   

    Election of new officers was held.  Nominated and elected for office were David Warden – president, Janet Seratte – president-elect.  Alan Spies will be Past-President and David Ralph will remain secretary/treasurer. 

    New members joining the PAAC are Genny Holman, Sheldon Webb, and Mattea Tate.

    The PAAC promotes the interests and welfare of the SWOSU College of Pharmacy and the Pharmacy Alumni Association by providing a direct communication link between the College of Pharmacy and its alumni.

    Nominations for additional PAAC members can be submitted at any time to the Alumni & Development office and/or any of the PAAC members


  • Michael Shawn Nick, D.O., Pharm.D. (2005) graduated from Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine on May 15, 2009.  Michael will start his anesthesiology residency at Oklahoma State University Medical Center in Tulsa in July, 2009.  He currently lives in Owasso, Oklahoma, with his wife, Drake K. Sellmeyer, D.D.S.


  • Darrell G. Ingmire (1975) of Tulsa, Oklahoma, sends news that he is currently working the night shift at Walgreens #3018 in Tulsa and has been with them for 15 years.  He previously had his own business for approximately 9 years and says he will always be an independent by heart.


  • Claudia Dalynn Brummett (1976) of Highland, Indiana, reports she is now a chiropractor specializing in neurology.


  • Lee Ross (1990) of Ada, Oklahoma, reports he sold his store, Lee’s Pharmacy & Gifts, and is now the Director of Pharmacy of Halo Rx in Ada, Oklahoma.


  • Jodi Forgay Graft (1999) of Edmond spoke at the SWOSU College of Pharmacy student chapter of ASHP on April 6.  Jodi is the Director of Pharmacy at Edmond Specialty Hospital.  She is a specialist in Long Term Acute Hospital Care and has been involved in pharmacy management for eight years.


  • EMT’s Visit SWOSU Pharmacy – The Weatherford Public School’s 8th graders in the Eagle Medical Trainee Program at the Weatherford Regional Hospital visited one of Weatherford’s most important assets…the SWOSU College of Pharmacy.  (More)


  • Jennifer Ann Shaffer Barbee (2005) of Yukon, Oklahoma, sends news of her recent marriage (April 17, 2009) to T.L. Barbee.


  • Janet R. Pelzel Adams (2006) of Yukon, Oklahoma, sends news of her recent marriage (May 30, 2009) to Ryan Adams.

  • Heather Dawn Anderson Carden (2005) of Moore, Oklahoma, and her husband Nick welcomed their second son Logan Brown on March 27, 2009, at 10:52 p.m.  Logan was 7 lb 10 oz and 20.5 inches long.  His brother, Nicholas “Avery”, is 2 ½ years old.

  • Ann Elizabeth Roach Canales (2001) of Abilene, Texas, sends news that Sierra Grace was born on April 22, 2009.  Big sister Abigail (2 ½ years) is very happy to have her baby sister.  And Mom and Dad (Pedro) are reported to be doing well – exhausted, but doing well.

  • Pharmacy Grads’ Facilities Recognized for Excellence – Lakeland Manor and Whispering Oaks has received the coveted Excellence in Action awards.  Gary (1969) and Mary (1970) Porter of Ardmore, Oklahoma, are owners of Lakeland Manor and Whispering Oaks.  (More)


  • Kimberly Maes Crosby, B.S. (1990), Pharm.D. was selected as the third-place award recipient of the 2009 National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) Foundation Community Pharmacy Faculty Award. This award is placed on commitment, dedication and contributions to community pharmacy.


  • Oklahoma Society of Health-System Pharmacists (OSHP) reports Yvette Morrison (1988) of Oklahoma City and Jennifer Bird (2004) of Yukon received OSHP Service Awards.


  • OSHP also reports Brooke Honey (2007) of Midwest City has accepted a faculty position with the OU College of Pharmacy – Tulsa in Pediatrics.



  • Sylvia Edgemon Hodges (1971) of McAllen, Texas, sends news that her daughter, Cheri, graduated from UT Austin School of Pharmacy in 1991 and is now practicing in Texas, also.

  • 2009 Homecoming is October 24 - The College of Pharmacy will celebrate SWOSU homecoming with special events on Saturday: a come-and-go Open House, a 50-Year Pharmacy Recognition Ceremony, and a complimentary lunch following the ceremony. Additionally, 25-year and 10-year class reunions are planned. All pharmacy alumni and friends are invited to attend the pharmacy events at SWOSU Homecoming. The COP activities will be held on the 3rd floor in the CPP building (Chemistry, Pharmacy, Physics building).

    In addition to the COP events, a plethora of university-wide activities will be held throughout the day, including the parade, alumni reception, SWOSU football game and concert. Please be sure to mark your calendar and make plans to attend SWOSU Homecoming in October.

  • Class of 1959 - The College of Pharmacy will honor members of the Class of 1959 at the 50-Year Pharmacy Graduate Recognition Ceremony. 

    Members of the golden class will have a chance to reconnect and reminisce at the 50-Year Pharmacy Graduate Recognition Ceremony held in conjunction with the SWOSU College of Pharmacy’s Open House, held on Homecoming day, Saturday, October 24.

  • Pharmacy Scholarship Co-Founder Named to SWOSU Distinguished Alumni Hall of FameSuzie Brewster, wife of SWOSU College of Pharmacy graduate Bill Brewster, was inducted into SWOSU’s Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame during the 2009 SWOSU Convocation on the Weatherford campus. (More)

    Suzie and Bill founded the Brewster Memorial Scholarship Fund in memory of Keisha and Kent Brewster, children of Bill and Suzie.  Bill is a graduate of the College of Pharmacy (1965) and a distinguished alumnus of the College of Pharmacy (1983) as well as a member of the SWOSU Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame (1990).

  • SWOSU Yearbooks Go Digital – More than 70 years of memories have gone online with the launch of the SWOSU Digital Repository for the Al Harris Library at SWOSU in Weatherford.  In addition to Serials, Government Documents and Electronic Resources now being digital, the main feature is SWOSU’s entire collection of yearbooks dating from 1906 to 1993. 

    Future plans include uploading the College of Pharmacy Apothecaries as well as SWOSU’s The Graduate Record (name of recent yearbooks), The Southwestern (newspaper).  Other periodicals and documents from the Southwestern Room at the Library will be included, too.  For more information regarding the digital repository, please contact Phillip Fitzsimmons at the SWOSU Library (phillip.fitzsimmons@swosu.edu or call 580-774-3731).

  • Ried Named New Dean of SWOSU College of Pharmacy – Dr. L. Douglas Ried has been named dean of the SWOSU College of Pharmacy.  He will start at SWOSU on July 1, 2009.  (More)

  • History of Pharmacy Dean Position - From 1939 to 1948, Pharmacy was first a department and then a division at Southwestern. In 1948, it became a school and Dr. Alfred Schram, a chemistry professor, was named acting dean. In 1949, W.D Strother became the first dean of the School. Dr. Walter L. Dickson led the school from 1965 to 1979. Dr. H.F. Timmons served as acting dean twice (1979-1981) as well as Dean of the School of Health Sciences (1987). From 1981 to 1987, Dr. B.G. Keller, Jr. held the position of Dean. Dr. Scruggs served as acting dean in 1988. Dr. Bergman then led the school for two decades. 

Upon his retirement in December of 2008, Dr. Scruggs served as acting dean once again. Dr. Ried will start at SWOSU on July 1, 2009…the year SWOSU College of Pharmacy celebrates 70 years of excellence.



  • Pharmacy Faculty Named Teachers of the YearDr. Randall Sharp and Dr. Scott Long were named Teachers of the Year for 2008-09 by the senior pharmacy students.  The awards were presented at the pharmacy senior graduate recognition ceremony held on the Weatherford campus.

    Sharp was the award recipient for the Department of Pharmacy Practice.  Long was the winner for the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.  This was the fourth time for Long to win the award at SWOSU and the second time for Sharp.

  • Pharmacy Faculty Member AdvancesDr. Kristen Harrison Montarella (SWOSU COP graduate, 2002) was awarded promotion in rank from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor.  She also was granted tenure.  The change is effective for the 2009-10 academic year.


  • Faculty Member Elected Grand Vice Regent for Kappa Psi – SWOSU College of Pharmacy Associate Professor, Dr. Ben Welch, was elected Grand Vice Regent for Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity at their Convention in Boston.  He has been a member for almost 40 years and has served on many committees and held a number of different offices.  He will be the Convention Chair for the next convention, scheduled for August 4-8, 2009, in Clearwater, Florida.   • New Faculty MemberDr. Melynda Ludwick has accepted the SWOSU College of Pharmacy Practice position in Oklahoma City.  She will begin her appointment on Monday, July 13, 2009.  She brings with her experience from the Albany College of Pharmacy.  Her husband is the Provost at St. Gregory’s University in Shawnee.


  • Faculty Member Plans to Retire – After 25 years as a member of the pharmacy faculty, Dr. Michael Deimling has announced his intention to retire from SWOSU, effective August 1, 2009. 


  • SWOSU College of Pharmacy Reported Scholarly and Academic Activity (FY09) – College of Pharmacy faculty have reported scholarly activity (Activity Lists: Extramural and Intramural).

  • Pharmacy Seniors Win Award – SWOSU College of Pharmacy seniors were honored at the College of Pharmacy Graduate Recognition Ceremony on Friday, May 8, 2009.  All seniors were awarded their Doctor of Pharmacy hoods.  Various senior awards were also presented to outstanding students.  (More)

  • Seniors receive gifts from Pharmacy Alumni Association. The Pharmacy Alumni Association Council (PAAC) Recent Graduates committee implemented projects to give senior gifts at the Pharmacy Graduate Recognition Ceremony, greet new graduates at the ceremony reception, and provide a complimentary one-year membership to the Pharmacy Alumni Association.

    PAAC members of the Recent Graduates committee donated much time and energy to collect the gifts, one of which was the NAPLEX review book donated by Wal-Mart. Many PAAC members also attended the Pharmacy Graduate Recognition Ceremony and greeted new pharmacy graduates at the ceremony reception.

    Additionally, a free one-year membership coupon, compliments of the Pharmacy Alumni Association, is provided to each new graduate.   • Patrick Wins Patient Counseling Competition – SWOSU College of Pharmacy student Tayana Patrick of Weatherford won the patient counseling competition on the SWOSU campus in Weatherford.  She advanced to the national competition in San Antonio, Texas.  (More)
 
  • Phi Lambda Sigma is selling “College of Pharmacy” throws as one of their fundraising projects.  (Order Form).  (Order Form)

    Proceeds from the sale of the 48” x 68” throws will be used to help send interested pharmacy students to the Utah School on Alcohol and Substance Abuse held each year in June in Salt Lake City as well as help send Phi Lambda Sigma representatives to the annual APhA Convention.

    The Alpha Psi Chapter of Phi Lambda Sigma was founded in the Spring of 1993. Phi Lambda Sigma is a pharmacy leadership society. Phi Lambda Sigma's primary purpose is to honor and recognize those individuals who have demonstrated significant leadership ability in pharmacy as students or practitioners. The Alpha Psi Chapter of Phi Lambda Sigma is very involved with various pharmacy school and community activities.
