Students - November News

  • Pharmacy Students & Lipid Monitoring Activity - Students enrolled in the Pharmaceutical Care Lab 3 have the opportunity to learn how different technologies can be used in the pharmacy to help monitor patient drug therapy. One of these tools is the CholesTech device, which can be used both to monitor patients' lipid levels and the liver enzyme, ALT. Students learn to obtain a capillary blood sample, perform the analysis, interpret the results, and counsel patients regarding the results.

In the lab, volunteer "patients" come to the lab to have their lipid or ALT enzyme levels drawn. These volunteers provide the students the opportunity to work with people other than their peers in the lab. In exchange, the volunteers are able to receive screening/monitoring lab results in about five minutes.

The lipid monitoring activity in PharmCare 3 lab is just one of the many ways students at SWOSU are learning the skills that will help them provide pharmaceutical care to their patients in the future.
