- Fall 2007 Alumni Dinners Postponed - Due to unforeseen circumstances, the alumni gatherings scheduled to be held in Lawton on Tuesday, September 11 and Amarillo on Tuesday, September 25 have been postponed until the spring semester. More information on the new dates will be available after the first of the year. The College of Pharmacy Alumni & Development Office apologizes for any inconvenience the postponement may cause the pharmacy alumni.
- Homecoming is November 3! - The College of Pharmacy will celebrate SWOSU homecoming with special events on Saturday: a come-and-go Open House between 9:30AM and 1:30PM, a 50-Year Pharmacy Recognition Ceremony at 10AM, and a complimentary lunch following the ceremony. Plus, there is a 40-year class reunion! And who knows what else!?! All pharmacy alumni and friends are invited to attend the pharmacy homecoming activities. The COP activities will be held on the 3rd floor in the Chemistry, Pharmacy, Physics building.

- Meece Contributes $3,000 - Clifford Meece of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, has given $3,000 to the Southwestern Pharmacy Alumni Foundation. The gift comes as part of the SWOSU College of Pharmacy $1 million campaign, which includes raising money for academic program enrichment, endowments, scholarships and the College of Pharmacy’s museum.

Clifford Meece (center) of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, recently gave $3,000 to the Pharmacy Foundation to support the College of Pharmacy. Receiving the gift are Patti Harper, Alumni & Development Officer, and Dr. David Bergman, dean of the College of Pharmacy.

According to David Bergman, dean of the College of Pharmacy, Meece’s donation is an example of the sense of loyalty that pharmacy alumni show the pharmacy school. “We greatly appreciate Clif and other pharmacy graduates who understand that giving back to the school allows an opportunity for the College of Pharmacy to move forward in pharmacy education. Pharmacy alumni are an integral component of the pharmacy program’s future. Their philanthropic support is essential to the outstanding education that the College of Pharmacy provides to its students today and in the future.”
Meece, a Victory High School graduate, earned his pharmacy degree from SWOSU in 1959. He owns Clif’s Pharmacy in Sallisaw, Oklahoma. Clif is married to Frances, formerly of Comanche. Their children Michael of Okmulgee, OK, and Lee Anne Hagins of Aspermont, TX, both graduated from SWOSU College of Pharmacy. Clif has been a Lifetime Member of the Southwestern Pharmacy Alumni Association since 1987.

- A pharmacy alumni reception was held at the Gaylord Texan Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas on Thursday, July 12 in conjunction with the Oklahoma/Texas Pharmacists Association Convention. A plethora of pharmacy graduates packed the room to renew old friendships and remember the foundation of their pharmacy careers at SWOSU.

- Donald Farris of Ozark, Arkansas has pledged $2,000 to the Southwestern Pharmacy Alumni Foundation as part of the fundraising campaign to support the College of Pharmacy.
Farris said he wanted to contribute to the pharmacy school because it gave him the opportunity to get a great education and become a pharmacist and he wanted to help others get the same opportunity as he received to become a member of the most rewarding profession…pharmacy.
Farris, a 1989 graduate of SWOSU, is a staff pharmacist at Harps Foods. While at SWOSU, he was involved with the Southwestern Pharmacy Association (SWPhA) and the Church of Christ Student Center. He has a son, Ryan, and a daughter, Amy.
The pharmacy campaign is focusing on academic enrichment, endowments, and scholarships along with the pharmacy school history and museum. - Rob and Detra Scheele (1987), of Rockwall, Texas, along with their 11-year-old twin boys, Samuel and Peter, visited the SWOSU campus this summer, taking time to show the boys where their parents met in the classroom on the first floor in the Pharmacy Annex. While visiting, Rob and Detra made a donation to the pharmacy campaign as part of the One Grand Challenge. Other members of the Class of 1987 are also challenged to participate in the One Grand Challenge.

- Velma Eaton Memorial Scholarship Fund Established – Richard and Steven Moore, friends of the College of Pharmacy, have endowed the Velma Eaton Memorial Scholarship Fund as a birthday gift to their mother, Melda Moore, who is the daughter of Velma and Albert Eaton.
Albert and Velma Eaton worked together to build Eaton Drug in Weatherford, Oklahoma. Mr. Eaton was instrumental in the founding of the College of Pharmacy at SWOSU. The Albert Eaton Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by Velma and her husband several years ago. Richard and Steven wanted to recognize the many contributions Velma Eaton also made toward the success of the business and the family.
David Ralph, associate dean for the College of Pharmacy and financial administrator for the Southwestern Pharmacy Alumni Foundation, said the Eaton family continues to be a valuable part of the Southwestern College of Pharmacy heritage.
- Medco Health Solutions of Fort Worth, TX, recently contributed $5,000 to the Southwestern College of Pharmacy Scholarship Fund. “Through the years, Medco has encountered many successful stories from Southwestern Oklahoma State University College of Pharmacy graduates who have joined our company fulfilling their career ambition as pharmacists,” says Cindy Wood, Director of Pharmacy Practice for Medco. “It is important for Medco to play an active role in supporting the Southwestern Oklahoma State University pharmacy program and we look forward in the future to further strengthening our mutually enriching relationship.”
By providing scholarship funding, Medco is fulfilling the goals of its University Level Support Program to advance pharmacy training with selected colleges committed to educating students for the areas of professional pharmacy practice. Medco believes it is significant for them to continue as it has done for the last several years to support student scholarships.
The active role that Medco is taking in Southwestern College of Pharmacy is greatly appreciated. Their gift will benefit deserving pharmacy students at Southwestern, according to College of Pharmacy Dean David Bergman. - Pharmacy Alumni Association Council – PAAC will have its Annual Meeting on Saturday, September 22, 2007, on the SWOSU campus in Weatherford, Oklahoma. The PAAC promotes the interests and welfare of the SWOSU College of Pharmacy and the Pharmacy Alumni Association by providing a direct communication link between the College of Pharmacy and the its alumni. - Pharmacy Alumni Association Membership - The Pharmacy Alumni Association (PAA) exists to support the Southwestern Oklahoma State University College of Pharmacy students, alumni, faculty, and friends. Through annual and lifetime memberships, the SWOSU Pharmacy Alumni Association exists to assist the College of Pharmacy in its efforts to educate pharmacy students, to provide opportunities for interaction with pharmacy alumni, and to recognize the contributions and achievements of pharmacy alumni. The Pharmacy Alumni Association is becoming more active as more pharmacy alumni become members. Susan Thiessen, SWOSU College of Pharmacy Admissions Counselor since 1977, retired this summer. Lyanna Schultz, former Administrative Assistant to the College of Pharmacy Dean, has replaced Thiessen as Admissions Counselor. New employee Kaye Abramson has replaced Lyanna Schultz. New employee Glenda Printz has replaced Anita Fisher who transferred to the SWOSU Admissions and Recruitment Office. Margie Vincent will be retiring in September. She will be replaced by Leshia Keeton.

- ACPE Accreditation - The SWOSU College of Pharmacy is currently conducting a self-study for accreditation for the upcoming ACPE site visit. ACPE, Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, is the accrediting agency for Colleges of Pharmacy in the United States.
A critical element of the ACPE self-study is feedback from pharmacy alumni. The primary method of obtaining input is through a standardized survey that is being conducted via the internet using pharmacy alumni email addresses. To submit your contact information including your email address, you may use the convenient online Update Your Information form. To submit your email address only, email swpharmacy@swosu.edu.
Student News - Summer 2007
- Pharmacy students Casey Woltz and Megan Rushing have been named the 2007 recipients of the NCPA Foundation Presidential Scholarship. Casey and Megan will be recognized at the NCPA Annual Convention in Anaheim, California on October 14, 2007. They each will receive a check for $2,000, among other gifts. The Presidential Scholarship is presented annually to students who demonstrate an interest in independent community pharmacy, leadership characteristics and has earned high academic achievement. Congratulations Casey and Megan.
- SWOSU College of Pharmacy Students Rank - NAPLEX and MPJE school pass rate statistical analysis are now available on the NABP website under Examination Program. SWOSU continues to rank high. www.nabp.net
