2005 Southwestern Pharmacy Outstanding Alumnus
Dorothy Gourley of Ardmore was recently recognized as the Southwestern Oklahoma State University College of Pharmacy Outstanding Alumnus for 2005. She was honored at the SWOSU College of Pharmacy’s annual awards convocation held on the Weatherford campus on April 25, 2005. The SWOSU College of Pharmacy Alumni Association sponsors the award.
A 1967 graduate of the School of Pharmacy at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Gourley has devoted over 35 years to the practice of pharmacy in a variety of settings.
In 1970, Dorothy Gourley was asked by a friend to serve as a consultant pharmacist to a small rural hospital in Oklahoma. This encounter proved to be the initiation point for her long career in rural hospital pharmacy. She developed many of the needed policies and procedures for that hospital and was directly involved in the evolution of rural hospital pharmacy developments in Oklahoma from that time until today. Although Dorothy Gourley has practiced in other settings, her primary focus has been in rural hospital pharmacy practice as a pharmacist, consultant, and director.
Her expertise in rural hospital pharmacy practice has resulted in many other professional roles. Dorothy Gourley chaired the committee that developed and implemented the rules and regulations for the hospital drug rooms in Oklahoma that are frequently the primary source for pharmacy in rural hospital settings.
Dorothy Gourley is a member of OSHP, ASHP, APhA, and OPhA, and has been very active in professional pharmacy organizations, including the legislative committees of OPhA and OSHP, the DUR Advisory Board to the Oklahoma Healthcare Authority, the Formulary Board for Advanced Practice Nurses, and Continuing Education Committees. Dorothy Gourley is a past president and executive council member of OPhA and a member of the Southwestern Pharmacy Alumni Foundation Board of Directors.
Gourley grew up in Denver City, Texas, but has been a long-time resident of Ardmore. She and her husband, Vincent, have one son, Wade, and one daughter, Cher.
Today, Dorothy Gourley continues to be a leader in rural hospital pharmacy practice in Oklahoma.
